Explore Parks & Nature in Kanpur
Kanpur Zoological Park—also known as Allen Forest Zoo—is one of India’s oldest zoological parks, established on February 4, 1974. Set within the lush Allen Forest of Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, it spans roughly 76 hectares and is celebrated for its naturalistic design, spacious enclosures, and focus on wildlife conservation.
Background
The zoo was conceived in the early 1970s within a man-made forest developed during British rule by industrialist George Burney Allen. Its undulating terrain and abundant greenery resemble a high forest, providing a near-natural habitat for its animals. The enclosures are open and separated by moats and terrain screens to reduce stress and encourage natural behavior.
Wildlife and Exhibits
Home to over 1,200 animals from 125 species, the park houses Bengal and white tigers, lions, leopards, elephants, zebras, and various deer species. A large aviary shelters parrots, peacocks, and cranes, while the reptile and nocturnal houses display snakes, lizards, bats, and owls. A scenic lake, butterfly garden, and dinosaur sculptures enhance its educational and recreational appeal.
Conservation and Education
Operated by the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department, the zoo participates in breeding programs for endangered species and hosts awareness workshops for students and visitors. It emphasizes wildlife welfare, veterinary care, and environmental education through guided tours and exhibits highlighting biodiversity preservation.
Visitor Experience
Open Tuesday to Sunday (about 9 a.m.–5 p.m.), the zoo offers rest areas, food stalls, electric carts, and a toy train for easy exploration. Entry fees are modest, with discounts for student groups. Visitors often spend 3–4 hours enjoying its shaded walking trails, boating lake, and family picnic zones.
Notable Recognition
Regarded as Kanpur’s largest green space, Kanpur Zoological Park serves both as a recreational retreat and as a vital center for wildlife education in northern India. Its balanced blend of nature, learning, and leisure makes it one of the city’s most popular attractions.
